Last week, I read through some of the Training Kit for the UX track at Lambda. I read all of the Fundamentals unit and the Research Planning section of the Discovery unit. I really want to get a better grasp of design, because I can see it playing a big role in creating web applications, as much as in static websites. I’ve also been looking at other UX resources, like the following video from DesignCourse on YouTube.
What I’ve mainly gathered from this particular video is a sense of partitioning sections of a page for balance purposes, wrapped in the concepts of contrast, color and scale for differentiation and hierarchy. Its considerably different from what I’ve done at work, designing front-end interfaces for our EMR, and also takes a completely different approach from what I’ve read in Information Dashboard Design, by Stephen Few.
Visual design and functional design seem to be different disciplines. Naturally, I’m going to have to seek out more resources on the latter, because the web resources I’ve seen so far focus on the former, and my long-term plan is to be able to create web applications, which will likely make use of dashboards for different user roles. Regardless, enjoy the video!
