Lambda School update: I’m switching to part-time

Its been two full weeks since I’ve had time to blog. A bunch of stuff has happened, but in a nutshell:

  1. The full-time pace at Lambda School is too much for me to sustain any longer. I really tip my hat to the people who are able to learn at the speed at which it moves. They’re going to be electron-manipulating forces of nature when they’re done. Working until 4 AM so many days for the past 7 weeks (2 weeks of pre-course and 5 weeks of full-time) is beyond my capability to continue. I also don’t like being an absentee dad and husband, which I really turned into.
  2. I’m switching to part-time. It’ll be 5 days a week, for 3 hours a day, instead of 8 hours a day. It’ll take place in the evenings for me – either 6-9 PM or 7-10 PM, EST (I can’t remember which). There’s an additional 3 hour session every other weekend. What we cover in a week at full-time speed is covered in 2 weeks at part-time speed. Its got some trade-offs (mainly focused around course completion time), but ultimately, I want to come out of the other side actually proficient in what I’m learning, and cramming every day during the sprints isn’t conducive to that.

  3. While I’m on hiatus (part-time for me starts on the 30th of this month) I grabbed Colt Steele’s Web Developer Bootcamp from Udemy. I started it earlier today. It has some overlap with what I’ve learned so far at Lambda and has the same basic stack: HTML, CSS, JS. It goes into different frameworks and libraries though. I’ll blog it as I go, as always, and do some comparisons with Lambda material.
  4. My first Build Week at Lambda was a success. I’ll post about it as I catch up over the week.
  5. React.JS has a learning curve. Its part of the reason that I need to slow things down.
  6. My sister’s weddings happened this past weekend. There was an Indian one on Saturday and a Christian one on Sunday. Her in-laws live-streamed it for family who couldn’t make it. They’re back in California now, and we’re hosting some guests until the end of the month.
  7. Kiddo #1 turned 7 two weeks ago and started 2nd grade last week.
